Logline:
Two Asian American sisters Fumiko and Hana have to pack for theshelter before a flood hits their neighborhood - but Fumiko ishesitant to leave as she uncovers their late mother’s keepsakes, confronting what has been lost across generations.~~
With a Chicago climate crisis as the backdrop, an interpersonal drama unfolds: the generational loss of language as a casualty of displacement. Told in almost real time, Nikkei sisters Fumiko and Hana return to their home to pack for the shelter before a flood hits, but discover their late mother’s belongings that triggers the grief of lost cultural lineage

	thank you for watching this film. i could not have done this without the generosity of both my family and chosen family. my father spent over two years designing and building the animatronic turtle, my mother called in favors from neighbors to secure locations, and my friends from los angeles and chicago flew all the way to my hometown in kobe to help me film this, cramming into my grandmother’s hallway i once believed was haunted.
i’ve learned that to make a film, one must build community, as it requires the collaboration of a vast network of people. likewise, the act of watching can give us opportunities to ground us in the world, to strengthen our sense of solidarity on a local and international scale. i believe that we must actualize what we yearn for.
to reflect this sentiment, i’ve added a paypal link where you can tip the film, which i will be donating towards Liyang org’s Climate Justice campaign. they provide direct relief and practical support to communities in mindanao, philippines, who are affected by climate disasters exacerbated by foreign corporate plundering. the funds will also support the campaign work of on-the-ground Lumad, peasant and agriworker activists that are organizing against this extreme land exploitation.

In A.I. Mama’s ending, the machine merges with the human in a conflux rather than a

devourment. Both characters, or forces, have a mutual desire to meet each other. Within the
animation sequence, Abe’s metallic, chaotic sound design grows to a crescendo as we see
Kei embody the madness of the machine they created: an endless oscillation of the mother
birthing the child and the child birthing the mother, blurring the line between the creator and the creation. The modern cyborg expresses this sentiment of karmic influence.

	“Above all else, [A.I. Mama] is a visual marvel, perhaps one of the most gorgeous films I’ve seen, both in relation to this list specifically and just in general. I would argue that no other film takes the risks that this one does, no other film is as effects-reliant, making it all the more impressive that Lin and their crew were able to pull it off.
	I deeply enjoyed this short, to the point where I’m nervous that by discussing it, I’ll do it a disservice. Put very simply, it’s a fun and beautiful push against binary ideology, visualized through gorgeous stop-motion body horror. Again, we’re dealing with very minimal dialogue, so most of the story is told through visuals, and even if you don’t take away that intended anti-binary push, you’re still left with some beautiful animation and stunning filmmaking.”
